Who I am and why I’m doing this

  1. Hello Jim:

My name is José Manuel Rivera Grimaldo, I’m from San Luis Potosí, Mexico. I recently finished reading your essay about The Bangles’ album Everything. I was amazed and very happy to have read a very good and highly erudite essay in many ways about one of my favorite rock bands.

I’m 49 years old, have a PhD in Education, and teach at a high school and a university. I’m also a Marxist, like you, and I also work in something similar to what you do: I specialize in social sciences applied to popular culture, but based on a critique of leftist political ideas.

I have a YouTube channel called CULTURA GRIMOS, which is obviously in Spanish. I can read and write a little English, but I don’t speak it. I’m currently reading the authorized biography of The Bangles (Eternal Flame) in English.

I’ve been browsing your website a bit and really liked it. Congratulations on all the work you do there. I’d like to stay in touch with you and perhaps share some thoughts or knowledge about popular culture (films, literature, and music from the United States, the country where my uncles and cousins live).

I’ll soon be finishing a project related to The Bangles, and you’ll be the first to know when it’s finished. By the way, I have a scholarly article about the gospel songs of Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan and their influence on popular culture (on Amazon, in Spanish, it is called Johnny Cash y Bob Dylan: la guitarra y la biblia en la carretera) . I’ll be doing The Bangles project I mentioned in both Spanish and English.

I’ve been very pleased to discover your website and your texts. Congratulations, and see you soon. Greetings from Mexico!
