  1. I love this Jim, you’ve articulated many of my concerns and frustrations with the show! Thanks putting it all down in one place – sometimes it feels in vain to try and stem the tide of patriotism the show has released, but I do agree that it could provide a vital platform to have some important discussions about Australian identity. Glad to see i’m not alone!

    1. Hi Mitch, I’m sorry for taking so long to reply to you. I wanted to let you know I really appreciate your comment and it made my day. I always feel like if even just one reader “got it” then I wasn’t wasting my time. Thanks for reading!

  2. I can’t even begin to express how off-base you are. Your gross thoughts about Calypso being an anti-vaxxer sum it up perfectly. You’re obviously a bit delusional. Those who said Calypso’s story illustrated the need for a happy ending were right on the money. There is too much sadness in the world right now. There are too many shows & movies with bitter endings. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending of the episode, even if it did seem a tad unrealistic. You seem to think people of a certain status will share your sentiments. I’m Gen X, poor & have been poor my entire life. There goes your theory. Money shouldn’t be everything. As hard as it’s been not knowing what it’s like on the other side, I’d still choose the happiness from love & family over the potential of more money any day. Calypso is the best, btw. In case you’re wondering, most hippies I know are vaccinated. Thanks for the awful stereotyping. I’m not a hippie; but they sure do seem happy.

    1. Answering your points one at a time: The need for a happy ending is a personal preference. I didn’t like it, you did, that’s not a reason to be insulting. Plenty of people *do* share my sentiment, as I referenced and linked in my piece, even if we are outnumbered in the fanbase. In fact, you’ve proven at least one of my “theories” by being defensive about honest criticism of the show — as I said, many Bluey fans do that and I don’t know what good it does. As I made clear in the piece, I love the show, but I think it deserves to be taken seriously and for its flaws to be discussed honestly.

I’m sincerely glad you’re not an antivaxxer! There are a lot of conspiracy theories and misinformation out there and it’s always great to hear someone hasn’t fallen for it. Good on you, I mean that.

As for Calypso: my crack about antivaxx sentiment in Steiner schools is a proven thing. Here’s an article about low vaccination rates at Waldorf/Steiner schools in California: https://www.theguardian.com/society/2019/may/28/anti-vaxx-california-waldorf-schools-immunisation
